Varsity Football Stars Fall on the Road to the Jays

Game Date
Aug 19, 2016
Score
STARS: 0
JEFFERSON CITY HIGH SCHOOL: 38

The stats weren't flashy — 63 rushing yards on 29 attempts and 169 passing yards in 26 attempts — but when a defense limits the opponent to 99 passing yards and 46 rushing yards before the second string comes in, there's not much need for flashy offensive numbers.

The Jefferson City Jays are now 11-0 against McCluer North with Friday night's 38-0 win at Adkins Stadium.

Mason York, Dennis Barnes and Cameron Billings each had an interception. Quinten Strobel and Corey Suttle recovered fumbles, with Suttle's being in the end zone, to give the Jays a 38-0 lead in the third quarter.

Erick Schwarz and Nik Williams combined for a sack on the third play of McCluer North's third drive, which ended with York's pick.

The Jays defense chased Stars quarterback Rashad Wilkins all night, stopping him at or behind the line of scrimmage four times. He ran 16 times for 65 yards, with 36 of those yards being against the second string.

"Our tackling was off the charts tonight," Jays coach Ted LePage said. "We created a bunch of turnovers. Our kids played free. Our defense, it just seemed like every time McCluer North lined up we knew what they were doing and we played with extreme passion."

The Stars ran the final 7:12 off the clock on an 11-play, 64-yard drive that concluded with Billings' interception.

"We feel like we have pretty good depth," LePage said. "That showed up tonight. That's a big, strong football team. That's going to be a good football team by the end of the year and we know it. Offensive line, defensive line, they probably went 270 or 280 and they were guys. We felt like controlling the line of scrimmage would be a big issue for us tonight, and I thought we did pretty well on the defensive side."

As for the offensive side, See was sacked four times and the Jays only had one run of more than 10 yards.

"The offensive side was good at times," LePage said. "We're going to have some growing pains with the O-line, we understand that, but we were able to put 38 points on the board. That's not a bad night."

The running back trio of Rashaun Woods, Damarion Nelson-Winston and Carson Ridgeway combined for 58 yards on 17 carries.

"You can't do to McCluer North that we feel like we'll be able to do with other teams is run the outside jet sweep series," LePage said. "They did a really good job with that with their speed. That kind of negated that, but we were able to run some power plays late in the game. Anytime you can run power late that's a good sign you got physical-ness out of your backs and offensive line."

The passing game was able to get chunks of yardage from the start. The first play of the game was a receiver screen to Adam Huff for 31 yards.

On their second drive, Allan Roettgen had catches of 13 and 10 yards to help set up Nelson-Winston's second 1-yard touchdown run of the game.

Barnes beat a pair of defenders for a 34-yard score on the first play of the second quarter to make it 21-0.

Huff could have had three scores in the second quarter alone if the passes were on the money.

Huff was open down the field for what would have been a 33-yard touchdown early in the period and found space for a potential 52-yard score with about four minutes left before halftime, but the throws were off the mark. He was a target inside the 10-yard line with about six minutes left in the period, but the throw was high and the Jays settled for a Maleek Jackson 22-yard field goal.

"The timing is just a little off, but it ain't much off," LePage said. "When it gets on, your going to see big nights out of Adam, Allan, Gunnar, the rest of the receivers."

There is potential for big pass plays in Week 2 against Springfield Central, which lost 31-6 to Class 3 school Logan-Rogersville on Friday night.
