Jersey wins tourney – Jersey knocked off Freeburg 2-0 Saturday afternoon to claim the championship of ts own round-robin tourney. Both teams entered the game 2-0 in the tourney, but Jersey needed a win to win the title because Freeburg held the tie-breaker because of goals against.

“We had to go after them,” said Jersey coach Scott Burney, whose team ran ts record to 13-3-1. “It was a good effort from the team.”

Against Freeburg, Jake Ridenhour had a goal and an assist, while Alan Wendell had a goal and Austin Kimbrel added an assist.

Earlier Saturday, Jersey knocked off Greenville 8-2 and Freeburg defeated McCluer North 4-0. Ridenhour scored four goals in the win over the Comets, Luke Palcheff added two and Rodgers and Wendell had a goal each.

Ridenhour had nine goals in three tourney games. He scored four in Friday’s 7-0 win over McCluer North.

“We’re a little ahead of where I thought we would be at this point,” Burney said. “We’ve been improving every game. Of our three losses (Waterloo, Triad and Highland), I think we stubbed our toe against Triad and Highland.”

The Panthers will get second shots at both next week. After playing host to Alton Monday, they will play at Highland Tuesday and host Triad Thursday.
