CHESTERFIELD • Lance Lang looks alone in his lane.

But there's more people than he can count running with him.

A sophomore sprinter for the McCluer North boys track and field team, Lang took home top honors in the 100- and 200-meter races at the Class 5 District 3 meet Saturday at Parkway Central.

Lang wrapped up fastest man of the meet honors as he finished the 100 in 10.72 seconds and the 200 in 22.01.

In his first postseason meet as an individual, Lang said he was anything but.

“Being a champ isn't all me. It's my teammates pushing me at practice,” Lang said. “There's no individuals, we're a family. You don't see me come out here by myself, we come out together.

I really thank my teammates and my coaches, they're there for me. I really appreciate them.”

Lang was dynamite, but nobody was better than Suburban North rival Hazelwood West. A year after winning their first state track and field state plaque with a fourth-place finish, the Wildcats won the district championship Saturday with 133 points. Ladue was the runner up with 107 followed by Pattonville (104) and McCluer North (78).

The top four finishers in each event advanced to the sectional meet next week.

The points poured in for the Wildcats from the young and old alike. Freshman Aaron Holmes won the 110 hurdles (15.38) and 300 hurdles (39.72). Freshman Justin Robinson won the 400 in 49.12 and was second in the 200 (22.34).

The 3,200 relay won in 8:13 and the 1,600 relay shined as it won in 3:23.

“We've been working for it since November. It's what I've been expecting,” junior BJ Carroll said. “It feels good to know the hard work has paid off.”

The lead leg on the 1,600 relay, Carroll gave the Wildcats a lead they would not relinquish in the meet's final event.

“If I pop it off everyone else's momentum is going to be there,” Carroll said. “Might as well start it.”

Ritenour was strong in the field events. Senior Jean Biayi won the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches) and senior Jeremy Swan won the long jump (21-4.5). Sophomore Justin Johnson won the triple jump (44-1).

Francis Howell Central's Trennon Curry won the pole vault by clearing 12 feet. Hazelwood Central's Ed Becton took top honors in the shot put (54-7.5) and Pattonville junior Dakari Streeter did the same in the discus (152-8).

Pattonville's Derrick Boyce III won the javelin (168-8). Francis Howell North's Bryan Chac won the 1,600 (4:35) and McCluer North senior Clinton Heffner grabbed the 3,200 title in 10:05. De Smet's Joseph Reed won in 1:56.

On the girls side Hazelwood Central cruised to the district championship with 168 points. Francis Howell North was the runner up with 99.5 points followed by Pattonville (96.5) and Francis Howell Central (89).

The Hawks got a monster day from junior standout Deja Ingram who doubled up with district titles in the 100 (12.01) and 200 (24.54). She had teammates on her heels in both races as Central senior Brittney Johnson was second in the 100 (12.05) and sophomore Danielle Frank was the runner up in the 200 (24.64).

Junior Aisha Southern took fourth in 100 to give the Hawks three competitors in that event at the sectional.

Frank won the 400 (57.6), too.

Senior Shauniece O'Neal doubled up on district titles with victories in the shot put (40-4) and discus (148-2). Junior Taylor Ramsey won the high jump (5-2).

The 400 relay (48.31) and 800 relay (1:41) also took top honors with Ingram as the anchor.

But there was a stunning turn of events in the 1,600 relay as the Hawks scratched the event. Central went 3:57 earlier this season, the third best time in the state, but did not enter the final as it did not have enough competitors.

“Unfortunately this is the same night as prom so we lost two of our main runners to that,” Central's first year coach Asaki Carr said.

Carr said the alternate she expected to use wasn't near 100 percent.

“She's feeling sore with her hamstring so we ran out of alternates,” Carr said. “I do feel confident with the other races we have that we'll do pretty good even though we don't have that 4x4 in there.”

Hazelwood West won the 1,600 relay in 4:01.

McCluer North freshman Michelle Owens was remarkable as she won the 100 and 300 hurdles. Her 100 time of 14.28 is the top time in the state. She won the 300s in 45.9 to edge Francis Howell North senior Breanna Wright (45.91).

“I felt like I had to come out and be ready for anything ahead of me and fight through all my races,” Owens said. “I'm ready to win state as a freshman.”

Ritenour junior Diamond Riley won the triple jump (39 feet) and long jump (17-8.75).

Francis Howell North junior Heidi Hauptman won the 1,600 (5:28) and 3,200 (12:38). The Knights won the 3,200 relay in 10:01.

Francis Howell Central's Emma Campbell won the pole vault (8-6). Pattonville picked up district titles from sophomore Kendall Battle in the javelin (93-7) and senior Da'esha Heard in the 800 (2:25).
